Our History

Progressive Missionary Baptist Church of Columbia, MO originated from Log Providence Baptist Church and was founded and organized by the Rev. Harold J. Butler and a group of dedicated Christians in April 1974. The Church worshiped in the Rising Sun Lodge (301 Sexton Rd, Columbia, MO) for the first time on April 7, 1974, with 56 people in attendance.

In 1975, land was purchased at the intersection of Banks and Dean Streets. The church voted to build the church in phases on the newly purchased land, with phase 1 beginning immediately and named The Educational Building. Phase 1 was completed in August of 1976, wherein the church walked form their Sexton road location to their present location at 702 Banks Ave.

In 1979 the church purchased two adjacent lots, and accepted designs for Phase 2 of the building. In 1980 Phase 2 was completed and Rev. David Shipley of Kansas City, MO delivered the dedication message.

In 1987, Progressive purchased another adjacent lot, and in 1988 began work on Phase 3, which added the Lord’s Kitchen and the Food Pantry. In 1991 Rev. Butler resigned, and Rev Amos Dotson became the interim pastor. June 16, 1992, Rev. Roderick L. Williams, Sr., after a strong candidacy one month erlier, accepted the position as senior pastor.

In February 1999 Progressive paid off its mortgage (Hallelujah!), and decided to use the now-available funds to buy another adjacent lot, which extends to Sexton Road. Currently, Progressive is still alive and growing. As recently as January 2001 Progressive added to their ministries by developing thier web minsitry. It is our hope that the next 27 years bring as much growth and blessings as the first 27 have brought!
